As a collection, ‘It’s Only Rock N’ Roll’ took its references from the idea of a world of youth, beauty, excess and raw emotion, in an attempt to capture the wild hedonism of live rock and roll and the culture that surrounds it. This necklace was my attempt to distil this passion and tension into a piece of fine jewellery, without losing the potency of the ideas behind it.
The tiny arrow-head shape clasp I hand-carved and it takes its references from the spur shapes that are so prominent in this collection. The contrast between the curved, shapely surfaces and knife-edge pointed lines was really important to me, even at this scale.
The lariat style of the necklace was intended to give a slightly louche feeling to it – a piece that can be thrown on casually, with a white t-shirt and leather jacket and gives the immediate effect of ‘cool’.
My research and design development for the collection was very much anchored in youth culture, rebellion and the idea of living life to its very limit. I was referencing the work of photographers such as Bruce Weber and Hedi Slimane, literature such as ‘A Rebours’ (J.K Huysmans), ‘The Rebel’ (Albert Camus) and the writing of Hunter S Thomson, watching Kenneth Anger films, in particularly ‘Scorpio Rising’, on loop and going to countless gigs in and around London.
I hope that the sensations of this world can be felt through this little emblem of elegant rebellion.
