‘The Shaman’s Triangle’ series is a tale of a character that I refer to as The Man Who. This fiery pendant is one of the key pieces of the collection.
Inspired by a story I read many years ago about the infamous Comte de St Germain, I concocted a narrative about a futurist shaman, as I saw him, a man who transcended centuries and cultures, a man beyond limits and beyond time.
My research for the collection initially grew out of my fascination with Masonic insignia and symbolry. The idea of a fraternity, a brotherhood, known only to a few. I also immersed myself in the writings of Aleister Crowley, the films of Kenneth Anger, the work of Derek Jarman and the Russian Constructivists. Luc Besson’s ‘Fifth Element’ featured fairly heavily, as did Mikhail Bulgakov’s incredible novel ‘The Master & Margerita’.
From the melting pot of this research, I envisaged a series of pieces that were drenched in blinding lights – hallucinatory amulets that has a sense of being hyper-real. The shape of the triangle features across all the pieces in this collection, as it featured heavily in my research. It is a shape of esoteric power – and I like to imagine this geometrically perfect shape has been elegantly skewed by the power of The Man Who. None of the lines are quite symmetrical, nothing quite matches up, but it works.
The combination of colours in this pendant was designed to re-create a fevered neon effect – almost euphoric in their impact. A talisman in honour of the man Voltaire described as ‘the man who knows everything and never dies’.
