I have always seen the Spur Ring as an icon of this collection.
My research and design development for ‘It’s Only Rock N Roll’ was very much anchored in an exploration of youth, beauty, excess and raw emotion. I was referencing the work of photographers such as Bruce Weber, Larry Clark and Hedi Slimane, literature such as ‘A Rebours’ (J.K Huysmans), ‘The Rebel’ (Albert Camus) and the writings of Hunter S Thomson. I was watching Kenneth Anger films, such as ‘Scorpio Rising’, on loop and going to countless gigs in and around London.
The final collection was my effort to combine these sensations into pieces of wearable sculpture, that felt good, looked beautiful and emanated the kind of raw energy I felt was important to the story.
The Spur Ring was an exercise in sculpture for me. I spent hours carving shapes until I arrived at what felt like the perfect balance of curvaceous, sensual lines and strong, powerful edges. I wanted a ring with volume and vitality, that also had elegance and purity in line.
The weight and feel of the gold was also important to me. The ring is unabashed, it feels good to the touch, it is a sensual piece to wear. Despite the shape being sharp and almost antagonistic, it also has a fluidity to it as it wraps around the finger, revealing the hidden sensuality of the form as it meets at the top of the ring, in this version highlighted with pavé set stones.
