SOLARIS ENAMEL SIGNET PAVÉ
From ‘Solaris’, Series II of ‘The Man Who Knows Everything’, this ring is a take on the classic signet. Using black enamel, combined with pavé set sapphires and a black rhodium finish on the top, Hannah has created a subtley dark colour pallette, enhancing the different textures to create a tactile piece of collectible sculpture. The inspiration for this series blends Russian Art Deco with the calculus contraptions of the period of enlightenment, conjuring up the dark powers of alchemy and magic.
18 Carat White Gold, Black Enamel, Sapphires and Black Rhodium.
This ring is made from 17.5 grams of 18 carat white gold with approximately 1.7 carats of dark blue sapphires. The top of the ring is coloured with black enamel. The stones are brilliant cut and pavé set by a specialist in enamel setting. The top of the ring is finished in black rhodium. Each ring is made by hand in London.
‘Solaris’ is a collection that draws on alchemy, magick and the Enlightenment period. Initially inspired by my fascination with the infamous Comte de St Germain I built a tale in jewellery around this mystery figure.
The Comte himself was a man of unknown origins and unknown end. His death was reported countless times, but having allegedly discovered the elixir of life he always reappeared in another place, in a another time, leading Voltaire to describe him as ‘the man who knows everything and never dies’. I was immediately transfixed.
My research, aside from reading endlessly about the Comte wherever I could, focussed on the alchemical contraptions designed and made during the period of Enlightenment, the work of photographers Bernd & Hilla Becher and the graphic art of the legendary Cassandre. I also immersed myself in the writings of Aleister Crowley, the films of Kenneth Anger, the work of Derek Jarman and the Russian Constructivists. Luc Besson’s ‘Fifth Element’ featured heavily, as did Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel ‘The Master & Margerita’.
With this ring I was aiming to create a signet-style piece that would lend itself to the Comte. The colour palette is dark, and the ‘orbit’ concept that runs throughout this collection is picked out here in the dark sapphires, the subtle colour contrasts between the black enamel, sapphires and black rhodium work to create the sense of an endless night sky with no boundaries, timeless and placeless.
Although the ring has a strong graphic and geometric feel, none of the lines are exactly symmetrical, giving the whole piece a rich sense of vitality, or at least that is what I hope.
