I designed this ring to embody a sense of taut energy, a suppressed thrill just below the surface. The shapes originated in drawings I was making of industrial clamps, and I wanted the ring to capture something of the mechanical feeling of these, but to imbue this with something subtly sensual.
As with all the pieces in this collection, I was looking for monumental forms – pieces that had a sense of sculpture and volume to them. The juxtaposition of the sharp, hard lines and the voluptuous curves is intended to enhance the tension of the piece, to add to the excitement.
One of my major reference images is a piece by George Bellows, depicting two boxers in a ring. They look as if they are at the end of a long fight. Their muscles are taut, and there is a frenetic energy to the piece, underpinned by an ambiguity. It is unclear as to whether they are holding each other apart or pulling each other together. It was this sense that I wanted to capture in the ring.
